Tips for Emailing Legislators
Updated – March 25, 2009

  • Be brief – try to share your key points in no more than three-four paragraphs
  • State your purpose for writing – highlight the reason for your email and state your opinion on your issue
  • Share your story – personal perspectives are more powerful than just facts; let legislators know how an issue affects your family, school or school district
  • Explain your situation or issue – legislators follow a variety of issues and may not be fully aware of your issue
  • Offer solutions – provide options to be considered to address your issue
  • Get your facts straight – before writing your email, make sure you have accurate information about your issue
  • Be respectful – state your views and opinions, but be respectful of the legislator’s perspective and the views of others
